The old lady
in the next apartment
leaves the lights
on all night

starts cooking
at dawn.
Before her
a den

of gay men
turned up the music
and tantalized each other
into the wee hours.

The tenants
before them
died of
drug overdoses

first he
from wild despair
then she
of loneliness.
